Description

Dan Cong (meaning “single bush”) is a category of famous oolong teas from the Phoenix Mountain in Guangdong. Our Snow (Winter Harvest) Dan Cong Roasted is grown in the Chaozhou region, Guangdong province, a region famous for this category of tea. It is a high-elevation single estate Dan Cong that is roasted, a tea traditionally known for being bold, floral, and aromatic.

The tea is carefully picked in the spring by hand, the tea is then withered and rolled, then finishes with the process of roasting to develop the flavor, and finally drying. The leaves are plump with a brownish hue with a slight aroma of baked goods. Once steeped, Snow Dan Cong Roasted releases a bold floral aroma and a clear amber soup, with a rich and bold taste of floral high mountain tea and sweet potato. Enjoy Winter Harvest Dan Cong for multiple steeps to fully explore its character and complexity.

This one was a nice surprise to open. I had forgotten this was not a pearl rolled leaf. Very light color and clear liquor. But don't be fooled, as the roasted notes pull through like a creamy froth smoothness. I highly recommend if you don't care much for green tea "grassiness". This is roasted, but not like dark charcoal. Still nutty, but very sweet and creamy.
I personally brew greener oolong leaves at 195 so as to not over scorch. Experiment with water temp for oolong leaves, it will surprise you.

Tastes better than some Dan Cong that I have paid more than twice as much for. Very floral and smooth. A lighter roast than some others I have had which helps keep the floral profile and just hint of tea bitterness/astringency that some Dan Congs can roast out which beautifully complements the highly floral qualities of the tea. I used 5g of tea to about 115ml of which lasted roughly 8ish gaiwans of tea it probably could be pushed further but at that point the flavour profile started shifting more from bright florals to some more grassy/vegetal flavours which aren't my favorite. I went with slightly cooler water as that helps maintain the floral flavours for longer i don't have a thermometer so i just try to aim for a fish eye boil which is about 180°. There does seem to be more twigs in this one than other but it does not seem detrimental in any way to the flavour or longevity of the tea session even when you count them as part of the tea weight.

The taste is traditional medium to dark roasted oolong tea. The smell is like orchid. Dan Cong is one my favorite tea for years. The character is strong. It is good that Tealyra has this variety now. Hope we will see more tea in this category.
