Winter 1st Flush Yunnan Green – Early-Harvest Umami Green Tea

Winter 1st Flush Yunnan Green is a very unique, very early winter-spring harvest — we believe it's among the very first green tea harvests of the year anywhere. This select Yunnan green tea is grown along the Liuluo River in southern China, where a mild climate allows the tea plants to produce tender new leaves remarkably early.

The traditional firewood method is used to halt enzyme activity, preserving the tea's brilliant green color while adding a wonderful, gentle smoky note. The result is a highly aromatic, umami-sweet green tea with a character all its own.

Tasting Notes

  • Dry leaf: highly aromatic
  • Liquor: brilliant jade
  • Flavor: full, umami and sweet
  • Accents: a gentle, smoky note from firewood processing
  • Finish: smooth and satisfying

Why You'll Love It

This rare first-flush tea lets you taste the very beginning of the new tea season. Its combination of umami sweetness and a subtle smoky warmth makes it truly distinctive, and it's naturally rich in antioxidants and L-theanine for calm focus.

  • A very early first-flush harvest
  • From the Liuluo River, Yunnan
  • Firewood-processed for a gentle smoky note
  • Umami-rich and sweet

How to Enjoy

Brew it in a gaiwan or glass to appreciate its brilliant color, and enjoy multiple infusions. It pairs beautifully with Chinese dishes, grilled vegetables and light snacks, and is a fascinating tea to share with fellow tea enthusiasts.

Fresh, sweet and delightfully unique, Winter 1st Flush Yunnan Green is the first taste of a new tea year. Enjoy!

This tea is really, really good. I smell and taste green olives, but my husband gets root beer. It's a fresh vibrant taste. I recommend a little lower temperature than is on the package (it recommends 190F for 3 mins, but I felt that brought out a little bit too much astringency, and I'd recommend 180/185F for 2.5 mins).

Beautiful color and taste. The overall taste of the tea is like eating a mix between a baked potato and mixed vegetables. It even smells savory, too.

I was pleasantly surprised by this tea. I use a scant handful of leaves in a tea kettle infuser. Umami flavor is there, pretty smooth and easy to drink.
