Gunpowder Temple of Heaven – Premium Smoky Chinese Gunpowder Green Tea

Chinese Gunpowder Temple of Heaven, or Ping Shui Zhu Cha, is a green tea traditionally grown and produced in Zhejiang Province. It's unique in both flavor and appearance and instantly recognizable by its shiny, glossy, tightly rolled pellets. This signature shape is created by drying the leaves in rolling drums, where constant rotation shapes them into small spheres that resemble gunpowder.

Our Temple of Heaven grade is premium quality — its tightly rolled, shiny appearance is a clear sign of superior leaf. It has a softer aroma and is less bitter than standard gunpowder teas, yet it still delivers the bold, satisfying flavor this classic is known for.

Tasting Notes

  • Dry leaf: shiny, glossy, tightly rolled pellets
  • Aroma: gentle green with a slight smokiness
  • Flavor: bold, thick and strong, with a smoky note
  • Finish: a slightly coppery aftertaste

Why You'll Love It

Gunpowder Temple of Heaven is a green tea classic that's perfect at any time of day. Its tightly rolled pellets unfurl slowly, so you can enjoy several flavorful infusions, and its bold character makes it a favorite for those who like a stronger green tea. It's also naturally rich in antioxidants.

  • A premium-grade gunpowder green tea
  • From Zhejiang Province, China
  • Bold and gently smoky, less bitter than standard gunpowder
  • The classic base for Moroccan mint tea

How to Enjoy

Enjoy it plain for a bold, smoky green tea, or combine it with fresh mint and a little sugar for traditional Moroccan mint tea. It also makes a refreshing iced green tea and pairs well with savory dishes and grilled foods.

Bold, smooth and timeless, Gunpowder Temple of Heaven is a must-have green tea classic.

this is among the very few green teas that i like. it has a very slight smoky (but not smoked!) and full-bodied flavour with a dark colour, and is not too bitter or grassy. it holds up to multiple steeps in my gaiwan. i enjoy it hot, cold-brewed, and mixed with chrysanthemum. if you want to treat yourself on a hot summer day, add gunpowder green tea leaves and chrysanthemum flowers to a jug of cold water and steep it in the fridge for 4+ hours. add pure maple syrup or honey to sweeten to taste. this is what keeps me coming back.

I was shocked at the excellent quality of this tea, especially considering the low price. I'm no tea connoisseur, but this is some of the finest tea I have tried. There is no bitterness at all. This will probably be my main go-to green tea. Awesome!

Tealyra is my favorite source of tea, no question. Must stipulate that, as I get this tea at a local Chinese market, which sells this in a range of units, up to 1-kilo boxes. And they display a mountain of it, so that says something about its popularity with veteran tea drinkers. Temple of Heaven is my go-to green tea. I recommend it.

Everything a gunpowder should be and organic to top it all. Assertive and elegant. The tea that my non-green-tea-drinking friends prefer.
